Mercy beyond borders…

On 26-27 Feb 16 the annual symposium was held at St. Peter Philosophical-Theological Institute, Viterbo, which has deepened, in the Jubilee year, the theme Mercy beyond the borders of the Church, from three points of view: anthropological cultural, pastoral and theological.

C16-2 C16-1

After the greetings of H. E. Lino Fumagalli, Bishop of Viterbo, and the introduction of Fr. Giuseppe Rainone, dean of the Institute, first took the floor the journalist Magdi Cristiano Allam, on “Mercy: model for interreligious dialogue. Christianity and Islam in comparison,” and then the journalist Lucetta Scaraffìa (L’Osservatore Romano), speaking on “Mercy: a new way of dealing with the fragility of the status of women and the family in the Christian culture.”

C16-3 C16-4

On Friday afternoon it was time for the pastoral horizon, with the paper “I see the Church as a field hospital. Our communities in the ways of mercy” by H. E. Giancarlo Maria Bregantini, Archbishop of Campobasso-Bojano. It was followed by the testimony of Fr. Gaetano Greco T.C., chaplain of the juvenile prison in Rome on the host community he founded, “Welcoming the ‘hopeless’ youth: new works or new relationships of mercy”.

C16-5 C16 8

The next day the two papers from the theological angle concluded the symposium. Professor Rosalba Manes, from the Pontifical Gregorian University, spoke on “The impact with the tender love of God. Jesus and the lost ones in the Gospel of Luke,” while the Redemptorist Fr. Sabatino Majorano, emeritus professor at the Alphonsian Academy, discussed “The awakening of consciousness in sleepy modern man. From forgiveness to gratuitousness.”

C16-6 C16-7

The various interventions were followed, whenever possible, by times of questions and answers, and Fr. Rainone was entrusted with the conclusions of the symposium.
