A saint, a family of educators, a pedagogical style

Who is the educator today?

Here is his identikit:

•    He knows how to stay in front of youth, how to propose human and religious ideals, lived by him and capable of living them;

• He knows how to listen also to unexpressed questions;

• He knows how to be courageous, overcoming the mediocrity of daily life.

These abilities come from a vision: “The vision of Jesus on the world, people, history that knows to recognize everywhere, together with challenges, also opportunities of grace that are visible. His is a vision of compassion… May this vision become ours.” (Circ. of the superior general of the Josephites of June 29, 2005)
For this, pedagogy of saint Leonard Murialdo and that of his collaborators and followers does not constitute a model to repeat. History passes and the working methods of the past are not to be copied as they were, nowadays.
They are not the “things” to do neither “how to do them” that we should ask saint Leonard Murialdo. These questions will find an answer in the analysis of present situation, in a serious and update preparation of every educator, in communitarian discernment.

How to resemble Saint Leonard Murialdo today?

We can ask saint Leonard Murialdo instead something else.
Above all eyes to see the situations that demand our intervention (poor and abandoned youth).
Then a right discernment of objectives: growth of every dimension of the boy, physical as well as intellectual, professional as well as moral, social as well as religious.
From saint Leonard we must learn also that a good educator, without underestimating a solid preparation, plays all his best cards in a relationship of love with his youth, sacrificing his life for them, even beyond what he must, because only a more unselfish spirit of service
is a sign of the greatest love.
Let us cherish also from saint Leonard Murialdo precious suggestions on family style, condition sine qua non for doing good, on hope, without which we cannot commit ourselves in education ministry, on sweetness and patience, qualities that not all possess, but all must strive to obtain.
Finally let us be driven by the conviction that, no matter how hidden is our role, no matter how least appearing is the task assigned to us, we are working in that humble, but irreplaceable educational ministry that saint Leonard Murialdo thought to be one of the most important and serious questions of his time and that remains an urgent challenge even today. (Writings, IX, p. 153)

Educational style of Saint Leonard Murialdo

What is it?

It is a project of research, deepening and spreading of our pedagogy founded on the educational style of saint Leonard Murialdo and known in many countries as Pedagogy of Love.
It refers to a process of multi- and inter-disciplinary reflection about the educational dimension of our spirituality.
Our charism is a pedagogical spirituality; therefore, our personal and communitarian journey in following Jesus for the building of his Kingdom is characterized by this educational thickness. Consequently for us all, religious and lay persons, who draw inspiration for our life from the Charism of saint Leonard Murialdo
the reflection on our pedagogy does not only look at what we do, but also to what we are. It belongs to our vocation to live in Christ. All along the process there will be proposals to reflect and share on different areas:
– Biblical-theological-ecclesial area
– Anthropological-pedagogical area
– Josephan-murialdine area
– Area of sharing good experiences marked by our educational style.
